Course Overview


Duration:  4 Hours (CPR/ First Aid) 1 Hour (Child & Infant) 1 Hour (AED)

Target Audience: Employees designated to provide first aid, supervisors, safety personnel

Regulatory Basis:

  • Title 8 CCR § 3400 (Medical Services and First Aid)
  • Title 8 CCR § 1512 (Construction – Emergency Medical Services)
  • Title 8 CCR § 3203 (Injury and Illness Prevention Program – training)


Learning Objective:
Ensure employees can recognize medical emergencies, provide immediate care, and perform CPR/AED safely until professional help arrives.

Introduction

  • Overview of workplace medical response requirements
  • When CPR/First Aid is required under Cal/OSHA:
    • No nearby medical facility
    • High-risk environments (construction, remote work, etc.)
  • Employer responsibilities vs employee roles
  • Overview of Good Samaritan protections (California)

Emergency Action & Scene Assessment

  • Steps in emergency response:
    • Check scene safety
    • Activate emergency medical services (EMS/911)
  • Primary assessment:
    • Consciousness
    • Breathing (Look, Listen, Feel)
  • Universal precautions & bloodborne pathogen awareness

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Adult CPR procedures:
    • Chest compressions (rate, depth, ratio)
    • Rescue breaths
  • Hands-only CPR vs conventional CPR
  • Child and infant CPR differences (awareness level)
  • Chain of Survival concept

Basic First Aid

  • Priorities of care:
    • Life-threatening conditions first
  • Wound care:
    • Bleeding control (direct pressure, bandaging)
    • Shock recognition and treatment
  • Burns:
    • Thermal, chemical, electrical
  • Fractures, sprains, and strains

Medical Emergencies

  • Heart attack and stroke recognition
  • Seizures
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • Allergic reactions (anaphylaxis awareness)
  • Heat and cold-related illnesses

Choking (Obstructed Airway)

  • Recognizing choking (partial vs complete obstruction)
  • Adult/child choking response (abdominal thrusts)
  • Infant choking response (back blows & chest thrusts)
  • Self-rescue techniques

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

  • What an AED does and when to use it
  • Step-by-step AED operation:
    • Power on
    • Pad placement
    • Follow prompts
  • Safety considerations:
    • Wet environments
    • Metal surfaces
    • Pregnant victims

Evaluation & Certification

  • CPR practice on manikins
  • AED trainer use
  • Choking response drills
  • Certification Card issued upon successful completion
